Bangladesh team shocked by players deaths in tragic train crash

Punjab coach Manohar Lal Pandya is among those who have blamed the Pakistan team for the deaths in the accident on Friday. "The players were trained for the tour to Dubai. They were given food to eat and all this for four days. All this was done for training," said Pandya. "In the morning a plane took off from Quetta with its passengers and the train derailed. The coaches and the security personnel lost their lives. When I heard the news of the death of one coach, I fell to my knees. I wanted to hug him too. I was so sad when I thought about my players. They are my life," Pandya said. "This team has trained for so many years. They have never experienced such tragedy. I have known a lot of players over the years but no one has ever suffered such an incident," Pandya said.

Meanwhile, Punjab and Pakistan have reached an agreement on compensation to those whose families lost relatives.


Punjab Cricket Board chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced on Saturday that the board and Pakistan Cricket Board had reached agreement on the payment of Rs 100 crore to help the families of those whose relatives suffered losses due to the tragedy.

Skelton selected to debut for wallabies against france

Wallabies star Michael Smith has been selected to start the first Test between the Wallabies and France at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday, the opening Test of their series against England.

The former NSW back is expected to take over from Scott Skelton at number eight, with the new Wallaby, Tom Cairns, returning to the starting XV at number six.

Mackenzie Brown will take on the captaincy at flanker at the start of Saturday's fourth Test, but will also get a full week off before returning on Tuesday for the All Blacks' Test against Argentina.

Cairns is making his debut after taking over from Smith, who has been named captain of his new team for four Tests.

The Wallabies will kick off their preparations on Wednesday for this autumn's World Cup at their home ground, Centurion Stadium.

Local govt group backs port hedland council tax hike

The Australian Government has backed an extra $120 million per annum for port infrastructure projects, after the Victorian Government backed off its port levy.

The Government has yet to release the details of what will go into the $80 million a year increase to the National Development Program.

The Port Council is due to finalise a $8.4 million upgrade of the Port of Perth on Tuesday.

Labor's transport spokesman Chris Uhlrich has called on the Government to make port capacity planning an election campaign issue.

He says if the Government did this, it would take a significant cut to the Port Budget.

"What we're saying is that it is absolutely necessary that we ensure that we are investing in ports of all sizes that are making economic sense and also providing a source of employment," he said.

He says the Government should be investing in these Port projects that will bring economic activity and jobs to Port Arthur and the rest of Victoria.

"To continue to wait and see is to delay what is going to happen in Port Arthur as we see significant growth," he said.

Victoria's Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews says he is confident the Government will provide a strong infrastructure package.

But he says Port Arthur still needs urgent investment before it can attract any new jobs.

"Port Arthur is the jewel in the crown of Victoria's infrastructure, but I can tell you it won't be the only one that becomes so," he said.

"We are very disappointed that the government has simply been more concerned about funding than that Port Arthur will attract more investment."

Argentine judge indicts iranians for 1994 bombing in Nangarhar

UNITED NATIONS—The United Nations human rights office on Wednesday accused Iran of war crimes, including murder, in the murder of at least 60 members of the Iranian Air Force (IAF) on November 9, 1994.

The office said the killings constituted war crimes in relation to alleged abuses committed by the Iranian Armed Forces against unarmed civilian civilians on December 8, 1994. According to the office's report released today, "the murder may amount to crimes against humanity, including those related to the execution of prisoners of conscience, and other serious offenses such as the violation of their fundamental human rights."

During the five days of alleged atrocities, the IAF engaged in extensive and systematic "dispersal operations," which apparently resulted in at least several hundred deaths and injuries. The office also accused the Iranian Government of ordering widespread executions, including of political opponents and journalists and mass killings of civilians.

The report stated that the IAF "in all probability" committed acts of war which amounted to crimes against humanity.

The human rights office criticized the actions of the Iranian government, the central government in Tehran and the armed forces and intelligence authorities regarding the alleged crimes. "While the authorities are in charge of the Iranian authorities in exile, the central government is apparently responsible for the acts of torture and ill-treatment of certain individuals and media activists," it said.

"It is crucial to ensure that the Iranian authorities and the armed forces know that a large number of human rights violations took place under their authority, and that they are investigated on the basis of the law, the evidence, and the most recent information," it added.

In addition, the report also noted "a lack of due process and due process guarantees. The authorities have been unwilling to prosecute any prisoners of conscience and the armed forces are not bound by the international community's obligations under the 1977 Additional Protocol I."
